Emily Ratajkowski just got candid about divorce – having split from her ex-husband Sebastian Bear-McClard in 2022 – and the taboos associated with it that might stop women from leaving an unhappy relationship.
The model, speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the Victoria's Secret World Tour fashion show, said: “I think there's a lot of taboo around divorce and a lot of shame. I think that isn't helpful, particularly for young women who are trying to get out of bad relationships.”
She added: “I want to spread a little positivity and I think that divorce, deciding to leave a relationship despite the financial hardship, despite what it's going to mean for your kids, everything, is really brave. I want women to feel better about it.”
Does Sophie not have every right to pursue passions outside of motherhood the same way Joe has the right to pursue things unrelated to fatherhood?
Her comments followed an earlier TikTok video in which Emily spoke about her own experiences of being married at 26 and divorced at 31 – and how empowered she feels at this point in her life.
“I don’t think there’s anything better,” she said of her own divorced status. “Being in your 20s is the trenches. There is nothing better than being in your 30s, still being hot, maybe having a little bit of your own money, figuring out what you want to do with your life [and] everything, and having tried that married fantasy and realising that it’s maybe not all it’s cracked up to be.”
Her advice to anyone feeling “stressed” about getting divorced? “Congratulations… it's good!” – and for good measure, Emily added in the caption of her video: “Personally I find it chic to be divorced by the age of 30.”

Many thought her comments were in response to the news that Sophie Turner, 27, and Joe Jonas, 34, have decided to divorce – prompting unfair speculation about Sophie's lifestyle choices and even her parenting of the pair's two young daughters.
Emily Ratajkowski married her longterm partner Sebastian Bear-McClard in 2018; the couple announced their separation in 2022. She told Harper's Bazaar at the time: “I feel all the emotions. I feel anger, sadness. I feel excitement. I feel joy. I feel levity. Every day is different. The only good thing I know is that I’m feeling all those things, which is nice because it makes me believe that I’ll be okay.”
