Copper continues to be one of the most coveted hair colours of right now. And heading into 2023, there's one tone in particular, set to lead the herd. Cowgirl copper is about to go wild, according to leading hair stylist (and TikTok forecaster), Tom Smith.
Given he's been bang on with his previous predictions (see: expensive brunette, bottleneck bangs and side-partings), we asked the pro to exclusively tell GLAMOUR readers which hair trend he'd put his money on being the one to watch in 2023. And when it comes to colour, cowgirl copper has got his vote.
“Inspired by the super rich, caramel hues of Western leather, ‘Cowgirl Copper’ is tipped to be the most in demand hair colour trend of 2023,” he told GLAMOUR. The look features “a super glossy, rich caramel tone that sits perfectly between brunette and blonde,” Tom adds and its perfect if you prefer something statement, but wearable and a little more low-key. “This is the colour for those scared of intense orange tones,” Tom confirms.
It takes its cue from the world of fashion which has seen an explosion in Western influences. “With Emily Ratajkowski seen sporting cowboy boots as a new fashion staple, and brands such as Chloe, Jacquemus and Isabel Marant, showcasing subtle Western and Cowboy references in their latest collections, it was only a matter of time before we saw ‘cowgirl copper’,” says Tom, who highlights the influence fashion and beauty have on each other.

Just like expensive brunette, and expensive blonde, done right, cowgirl copper can look seriously luxe. “This looks amazing when coloured from root to tip and the focal point is on the intense shine this warm, rich tone provides,” says Tom. “It oozes opulence and will look transformative in a subtle way.”

And you can even tentatively try it before you commit. “If you’re hesitant to cover up existing highlights to achieve this all over colour, why not try a temporary gloss first to make sure you love it,” says Tom. “Evo Fabuloso does two ideal shades: Caramel for those wanting a lighter result, and Chestnut for those looking for maximum intensity. Leave this colour boosting treatment on for 5-10 minutes to get maximum condition, shine and tone,” he says.
