The blunt bob is the haircut we keep seeing everywhere. From the latest crop of SS22 runways, to the heads of some of the world's most stylish celebs (Kaia Gerber, Kourtney Kardashian and Billie Eilish to name a few), the blunt bob has proven its position as one of the chicest and most versatile cuts, which is why it's no surprise that it's one of autumn's biggest hair trends.

Of course, blunt bobs aren't exactly new, the history behind them is pretty interesting. “The blunt bob is a ‘defining’ trend," said explains Scott Cornwall, hair expert at Knight & Wilson salon. "Blunt Flapper Cuts first emerged 100 years ago and it is only natural the 2020s will reignite interest in bob foundations."

Scott also believes that major hair cut trends often follow a prior trend that involved high chemical processing. "Dry, over-lightened, ombre mid-length and ends have been crying out for the chop," he said. "Therefore, the blunt bob cut sets hair back to default by chopping away over-processed mid-lengths and ends and leaving behind healthy, strong, swinging hair.

Elizabeth Williams at KH Hair in Hinckley believes that blunt bobs are gaining popularity for being 'chic, wearable and super versatile'. "They can be worn with laidback waves or done straight for a super elegant feel," she adds.

"A blunt bob works with all hair types"

In the same ilk, Vivienne Johns, co-founder of Hunter and Walsh, believes blunt bobs are soaring in popularity because they can be worn by women with all hair types. "With the right treatments, any hair texture can go for the big, blunt chop too and maintain it afterwards with ease."

If you're tempted to trial the trend, Louise Bailey @louisebailey_extensions, says precision cutting is key. "A regular cut every 6 to 8 weeks to maintain the shape and blunt edges is what will keep the bob in its best blunt shapeley cut," she explains. "The bob can also be thickened with tape hair extensions to give it that extra groomed perfect look if the ends are fine."

"A blunt bob works wonders for thin hair"

One thing about the blunt bob is that it creates the illusion of more volume - which is great news for anyone with fine or thin hair. Whereas layers take away from fullness, a defined edge will remove any wispy-looking, thin ends.

"A blunt bob is easy to maintain at home"

To maintain your hair at home, ensure your haircare arsenal is equipped because this hairstyle requires more blow drying and heat styling than longer hairstyles do, so swap a conditioner for a nourishing mask to prevent strands from drying out. You should also add dry styling products such as powders and texturising sprays to your kit in order to keep your bob looking fresh and current.
