The best Prosecco is something that's widely disputed across Europe. Some will swear by a Pinot Noir grape base, while others like the more traditional glera grape. It can be somewhat of a minefield to the untrained Prosecco drinker, so we thought we'd do a bit of the researching legwork for you and explore what it really takes to become the best bottle of Prosecco.

According to the incredible guys at MasterClass - the online learning service offering its members lessons in everything from wine appreciation to productivity - Prosecco is made in Conegliano Valdobbiadene in the Veneto region of Italy, with its capital being, of course, the ever popular city of Venice. It requires a minimum 85% of glera grapes in order to hold the illustrious Prosecco title and, while it can be made from the glera alone, it is often combined with - as mentioned - a Pinot Noir grape or a Chardonnay. You may have also heard the terms ‘spumante’ and ‘frizzante’ batted around before and, in essence, the former means sparkling while the latter means gently sparkling. While both bottles of bubbly are acidic and refreshing, compared to Champagne, Prosecco is commonly ‘brut’ whereas Champagne is normally ‘extra brut.’ This means that the Champagne taste is traditionally dryer than Prosecco, not to mention the two are carbonated differently.

Best Italian Prosecco
Della Vite Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG NV Magnum 1500ml

Why we love it: The product of the three Delevingne sisters, Della Vite Prosecco has been a prestigious DOCG status, which is the highest certification an Italian wine or sparkling wine can receive. With aromas of tropical fruits, as well as green apple, florals and an oh-so-subtle almond-like note, Della Vite is not only fermented in the UNESCO Valdobbiadene Valley, but it's actually vegan, too. And, what's more, it's packaged in a beautiful magnum bottle, ideal for Christmas and birthday gifts

Best Prosecco UK 2022
Conte Collalto Extra dry Prosecco

Why we love it: The product of a longstanding family in the Prosecco-making industry, Collalto Prosecco comes from the heart of Treviso in the Veneto and, in a traditional style, contains only the Glera grape. With buyers noting fruity flavours of peach, stone fruit, apricot and pair, as well as some citrus aromas to balance out the Prosecco's acidity, Conte Collalto goes well with shellfish and charcuterie and is a lovely luxury aperitif.

Best Aldi Prosecco
Prosecco Superiore DOCG

Why we love it: An award winner at the International Wine Challenge 2021, Aldi's Prosecco Superiore is not only affordable, but also brings a luxe creamy consistency with refreshing notes of orchard fruits, including crisp apple. It pairs excellently with panettone or brioche and is a top choice for brunch fizz.

Best rosé Prosecco
The Best Prosecco Rose DOC

Why we love it: A blend of grapes, including both Glera and Pinot Noir, to create that signature rosé wine colour, Morrisons' Prosecco rosé brings buyers notes of white peach and berries and, like Aldi's was an award winner at the International Wine Challenge in 2021. With a fairly standard 11% ABV and the option to save 25% if you buy three bottles or more through Morrisons, their Prosecco rosé is a great choice for celebrations and is even recommended for an Aperol Spritz rosé.

Best cheap Prosecco
Freixenet Prosecco D.O.C

Why we love it: A gold and bronze medal winner on separate occasions, Freixenet winemakers are longstanding in the industry and have been going since 1861. Though they're perhaps most renowned for their Cava, the Freixenet Prosecco is not to be overlooked and brings through strong yet refreshing notes of citrus fruits and apple. The bottle is great for gifting and, in terms of versatility, Freixenet Prosecco D.O.C goes just as well with antipasti as it does a rich mousse or dessert.

Best Prosecco under $20/£20
Silterra Prosecco

Why we love it: With Vivino offering buyers delivery on their wines practically worldwide, Silterra Prosecco is more of a sparkler (with customers rating it more fizzy on the whole) and, though it's likely not available from your local supermarket, it brings through delicious honeysuckle aromas and contains less residual sugar than Champagne due to its slightly lower ABV. It's not one to overlook and comes in at an accessible price point.

Best Prosecco Tesco
Finest Prosecco Valdobbiadene Docg 75Cl

Why we love it: A top all-round pick, Tesco's Prosecco Brut is zesty, bold and a great way to kick off a soiree or outdoor do; it pairs wonderfully with canapés and, from the heart of the UNESCO Valdobbiadene Hills, is made in the traditional Glera grape method. For those unfamiliar with the process, that means that the prise de mousse - the way to achieve the Prosecco's signature bubbles or ‘froth’ - takes place in a pressurised vat to maintain the desired sugar levels that differentiate the fizz from its Champagne cousin.

Best Prosecco 2022
La Gioiosa Brut Prosecco Valdobbiadene DOCG Superiore Millesimato

Why we love it: Highly reviewed by buyers with an average 4.7 out of five stars, La Gioiosa Prosecco Brut is the product of a renowned Italian white wine and Prosecco maker and combines flavours of sweet golden apple with more herbal acacia flower. It comes in a wonderful bottle for gifting and, given the quality, is surprisingly affordable.

Best Prosecco for mimosas
Canti Spumante Prosecco, 75 cl

Why we love it: Canti is somewhat of a household name for Proseccos at this point and, being from the Lake Garda Veneto region, it's still carbonated using the traditional Presa di Spuma process. Super affordable and with notes of tree fruits and flowers, Canti Prosecco works well with lightly salted foods like crisps and appetisers and, with a spumante finish, it maintains its fizz well when mixed into a mimosa or Aperol Spritz.

Good Prosecco
Bottega Gold Prosecco, 75 cl

Why we love it: A tad more expensive, so a great choice for luxe gifts and celebrations, Bottega's Gold Prosecco is very drinkable and comes from a winemaker with over 40 years of experience, not to mention being produced in Bibano, a village in the traditional Treviso region. With great reviews and an exceptionally delicious taste when fresh from the fridge, Bottega is a top notch serve for those hot, balmy summer days.

Top Prosecco
Blueprint Prosecco DOC

Why we love it: One of the most affordable picks in this selection - which comes as a bit of a surprise for Waitrose - Blueprint Prosecco is more frizzante than spumante and has received three separate awards over the last five years. It's very drinkable with notes of pear and apple and, as advertised by the brand, is particularly lovely when mixed with cordials or in a cocktail. Cheers!

Nicest Prosecco
Prosecco Spumante Extra Dry (Glera & Chardonnay) 75Cl 11%Vol

Why we love it: A unique pick with a mix of Glera and Chardonnay grapes to create an extra dry finish and more intense flavour, Podium Spumante uses the long Charmat method of fermentation, as is traditional and, unlike some of its competitors, pairs best with shellfish - perfect for summer.

Best Prosecco Sainsbury's
Corvezzo Prosecco DOC Millesimato Biologico Organic 750ml

Why we love it: One for the hangover prone drinkers, Sainsbury's Corvezzo Organic Prosecco will help to minimise the after effects of drinking with a slightly lower sulphite content. Plus, made in Treviso as a part of the renowned Freixenet Copestick Ltd. group (the makers of Freixenet Prosecco), Corvezzo Prosecco is spumante - a little bit fizzier - and as such, suitable for drinking au naturale or in an Aperol Spritz or cocktail.
