15 Best Mineral Sunscreens to Shield Skin from UV Rays in 2023

Although underrated, mineral sunscreens (or mineral SPFs) are often applauded for their ability to shield our skin from the harmful UV rays, and deservedly so. Compared to their chemical counterparts, mineral sunscreens tend tend to feature a much more gentle formula, making it perfectly suitable for sensitive complexions. Not to mention, they also offer broad spectrum protection, aimed to deflect blue light, UVB and UVA rays (which may cause pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles and the breakdown of collagen).

But as good as they are, mineral sun creams haven't always been as popular a choice as you'd think and understandably, some of us can also have an outdated understanding of what they can offer. In the past, many of them would stain our clothes and leave behind a sticky residue and a white cast on our skin. Thankfully, newer iterations of mineral sunscreen lotions have found a way to fix these problems.

Meet the experts:

As someone who has sensitive skin, I've previously struggled to find a sunscreen for face that would do the job without irritating my skin or causing my redness to flare up upon application (similar case to other skincare products). Although chemical SPFs are admittedly more convenient, and often result in a beautiful glowy finish, I couldn't find a gentle formula that could work for me on an everyday basis. And as someone with a fair complexion that tends to burn after spending more than 30 minutes in the sun, I couldn't exactly pass on the broad complexion options that the mineral sunscreens had to offer.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Anti-Shine Sun Cream Gel SPF50+

So far, my favourite has to be the La Roche-Posday Anthelios Anti-Shine Sun Cream Gel SPF50+ (I know, an absolute tongue-twister). It features a gentle, gel-like formula that melts into the skin within minutes, resulting in a non-greasy finish. It's deservedly earned a permanent spot in my beauty cupboard and it's safe to say that it's not going anywhere.

What are mineral sunscreens?

Generally, sunscreens and sun creams are split into two categories: mineral (also known as physical) and chemical sunscreens. Mineral formulas tend to rely on ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to sit on top of your skin and physically block out harmful UV rays.

Many physical sunscreens also tend to include active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, which help hydrate dry skin and create a smoother surface, which means that they can even double as a primer that you can layer underneath your makeup.

Mineral sunscreens vs. chemical sunscreens – what type of sunscreen is better for your skin?

Mineral sunscreens tend to have a more gentle formulation than chemical sunscreens, which makes them an optimal choice for children as well as those of us with more sensitive and acne-prone skin. Most of them also offer broad spectrum protection, which means they deflect blue light, UVB and UVA rays, the latter of which are responsible for pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles and the breakdown of collagen.

On the other hand, chemical sunscreens use UV filters such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and/or octinoxate to sink into your skin and prevent harmful UV light from causing sun damage. Most chemical sunscreens absorb into your skin very quickly, make your skin looking nice and dewy and don't leave any white cast behind, which makes them a good choice if you want something to use on-the-go.

However, in the past, governing bodies such as the FDA have expressed some concerns regarding the long-term effects of (some, not all) chemical filters. Plus, chemical sunscreens may also irritate sensitive and rosacea-prone skin. But remember that skin cancer is no joke. Even if you have a darker skin tone, any dermatologist will tell you that any sunscreen is better than no sunscreen at all. Make sure to grab something that's at least SPF 30 – better yet, go for SPF 40 and SPF 50 just to be sure.

“Mineral sunscreens and chemical sunscreens differ in the way they protect the skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun,” shares Dr Radmila Lukian, dermatologist and skin expert at Lucia Clinic. “Mineral sunscreens are often preferred by individuals with sensitive skin, as they are less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions.”

“It's important to note that both mineral and chemical sunscreens can be effective at protecting the skin from the sun's harmful rays, but some people may prefer one type over the other based on their skin type or personal preferences," adds Dr Ludmila.

What are the benefits of using a mineral sunscreen?

According to Dr Radmila, mineral SPFs are safe for sensitive skin and are less likely to cause skin irritation or allergic reactions than chemical sunscreen. “Mineral SPF is more heat-resistant and tends to last longer than chemical sunscreen, making it an excellent choice for protecting the skin against the sun’s harmful rays,” she says.

Mineral sunscreens are also generally considered safe for most people, including those who are pregnant or have sensitive skin conditions such as eczema. However, Amanda Azzopardi, aesthetic nurse and founder of Amanda Azzopardi Aesthetics, still recommends consulting with a healthcare professional or a dermatologist before using any skincare product.

“Some people may have individual sensitivities or allergies to certain ingredients, so it's best to check with a medical expert to determine if a mineral sunscreen is right for you,” says Amanda. "When shopping for mineral sunscreens, look for those that are labelled as ‘non-comedogenic’ and ‘hypoallergenic’, which are less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions."
